Roulette Bets Explained: Inside Bets, Outside Bets and Odds
Roulette has dozens of bets, but they all follow the same simple logic. Here is how each one works and what it pays.
European vs American roulette
A European wheel has 37 pockets: numbers 1 to 36 and a single zero. An American wheel adds a double zero, making 38 pockets. That extra pocket raises the house edge from 2.7% to 5.26%, so European roulette is the better choice whenever you have it.

Inside bets
Inside bets are placed on specific numbers. They pay more but win less often.
| Bet | Covers | Pays |
|---|---|---|
| Straight up | 1 number | 35:1 |
| Split | 2 numbers | 17:1 |
| Street | 3 numbers | 11:1 |
| Corner | 4 numbers | 8:1 |
| Six line | 6 numbers | 5:1 |

Outside bets
Outside bets cover large groups of numbers. They win more often but pay less.
- Red or Black, Odd or Even, 1-18 or 19-36: pay 1:1.
- Dozens (1-12, 13-24, 25-36): pay 2:1.
- Columns: pay 2:1.
The zero is not red, black, odd or even, so all outside bets lose when the ball lands on zero. That is where the house edge comes from.
Why every bet has the same edge
On a European wheel, almost every bet has the same 2.7% house edge, whether you bet on one number or on red. The difference is only how often you win and how much. Choose the style that suits you: outside bets for steady play, inside bets for bigger but rarer wins.
Frequently asked questions
What is the safest bet in roulette?
Even-money outside bets such as red or black win most often, at just under 50% on a European wheel. They do not have a lower house edge, but they give the steadiest results.
Which roulette has the best odds?
European roulette, with a single zero and a 2.7% house edge. Some tables offer La Partage rules, which lower the edge on even-money bets further.
Can you predict where the ball will land?
No. Each spin is independent, and previous numbers do not affect the next result.
